Springfield Dominican Sister Mary Noel Plummer, OP, died April 13, 2022, at Sacred Heart Convent, in the 70th year of her religious profession. She was born in 1933 in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in Decatur, Ill., by her parents Chester and Helen, (nee Friel) Plummer. She was baptized Nancy Agnes and made her profession of vows in 1952 at Sacred Heart Convent.

A dedicated teacher and principal, Sister M. Noel is remembered fondly by students from her days of teaching primary and junior high school students in Springfield, Litchfield, Jacksonville, and Chicago. She was an elementary school principal in Chicago, New Berlin and in Springfield, first at Little Flower and then at St. Agnes. After more than 30 years in education she transitioned to pastoral ministry at parishes in Decatur and Kankakee, where she was known to be a compassionate, gentle, friendly support to parishioners and parish staffs alike.

In 1999 she was elected by her Dominican sisters to serve as prioress of Sacred Heart Convent. After two terms in that role she gave many years of service as a part-time switchboard operator and was, always, a full-time encourager of everyone she encountered.

Sister M. Noel was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister, Sister Helen Marie Plummer, OSF, Springfield, several cousins, and by her Dominican Sisters.

  1. Sister Mary Noel was my first grade teacher in Litchfield. I loved her so much. When I found out she wasn’t coming back for second grade, I was very upset. My parents took me to Jacksonville to see her so that I would know she was OK. May she rest in peace.

Sr. Mary Noel, I had the privilege of meeting her through Sr. Megan. You always had so much to share and made a person feel like you’d known them for ages. I’m sure you’re getting a group together to play cards and that you arm and hands are working pain free. You will be missed. Sr. Megan is happy to have her friend with her.

Sister Mary Noel was our first & second grade teacher at St Marys in Litchfield, I loved her so much! She was kind and loving! I visited her a few years ago when Sister Marie Vianney our cousin passed. She wrote to me after the visit, she was still as sweet as in 1959. Rest in Peace Sister Noel
