Private burial at Calvary Cemetery, Friday, August 21. A memorial mass will be held at Sacred Heart Convent at a later date.

Springfield Dominican Sister M. Anton Uthe, OP, died August 17, 2020, at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield, Ill. She was born on her family’s farm near Gilbert, Iowa, in 1923. Her parents, Anton and Esther Reichart Uthe, baptized her Alice Cecilia at St. Peter & Paul Church in Gilbert. She made her profession of vows at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield, in 1943.

Sister M. Anton taught grades 1-8 throughout her 54 years of educational ministry. In two instances she taught and was principal at the same time. In Illinois, she ministered in schools in Kampsville, Chicago, Springfield, Algonquin, Michael, Bethalto, Hampshire, Newton, and Mendota, where she served for 12 years at Holy Cross School and another 6 years as minister to the sick. She also taught in Lenox, Mich., and Duluth, Minn.

A farm girl who once said she appreciated the contemplative nature of religious life most of all, Sister M. Anton was preceded in death by parents; her brothers Daniel, Joseph, and Lawrence, and her sisters Margaret Colantino and Helen Mullenbach. She is survived by her brother Clarence (Elizabeth) Uthe of Elma, Iowa; her sister Mary Smith, and her sister-in-law Margaret Uthe, both of Boone, Iowa; many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
