TO ALVERNA
Written and sung by the pastoral workers at the National Catholic Office of the Deaf during her farewell celebration as she prepared for her mission in Peru.
Alverna once taught high school Art
And thought that’s where she’d stay
And after school she taught deaf kids
‘Bout God and how to pray.
Dave Walsh said, “Come to Pastoral Week—
I promise you’ll have fun.”
She did—and now she has his job
And lives in Washington
She works there as an author,
Editor, and speaker too;
Interpreter, fundraiser,
Always learning something new.
She cooks and sews and babysits
And studies Spanish, and
Each morning exercise to
Improve her tennis hand.
Now you might call NCOD (National Catholic Office for the Deaf)
And find she isn’t in
Just redirect your call to Spain
Or China or Berlin
Or Israel or Ireland
Or someplace in between
We might raise eyebrows but in truth
We might envy where she’s been.
And now her plans toward Peru
So far from us she’ll feel,
And we applaud her faithfulness
And missionary zeal.
Alverna, Buena amiga, gracias!
Gracias por todo!
Nuestros corazones van con tu-u en Peru.
(Translation: good friend, thank you!
Thank you for everything!
Our hearts go with your to Peru.)
