Springfield Dominican Sister Janice Greenwood died January 4, 2017, at Sacred Heart Convent. She was born in Chicago, Ill., in 1932, to John and Agnes (Meyer) Greenwood. She made her profession of vows in 1951 at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield, Ill.
Sister Janice faithfully served God’s people and her Dominican Sisters for 66 years, first as an elementary school teacher in Springfield and the Chicago suburbs, 1951-1970, then as a home economics teacher at Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights, Ill., 1970-1982, and Rosary High School, Aurora, Ill., 1982-1986.
From 1986-2002 she ministered at St. Mary-Rogers Memorial Hospital, Rogers, Ark., serving in various administrative roles. For the last years of her active ministry she assisted her sisters at Sacred Heart Convent, welcoming guests, sewing, and helping in other ways.
Sister Janice was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John, and two nieces. She is survived by her sister Clare Deardorff, Lombard, Ill.; sister-in-law Barbara, Sandwich, Ill., many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The Dominican Sisters will receive visitors 4:00-5:15 p.m., Wednesday, January 11; prayer service 4:00 p.m., Aquinas Center, Sacred Heart Convent, 1237 W. Monroe St. Morning prayer 9:00 a.m., Thursday, January 12, funeral Mass 10:00 a.m., convent chapel; Father Peter Witchousky, OP, celebrant. Burial of cremated remains, Calvary Cemetery.
