Sister Ann Clennon understands the agony immigrant women face when they don't understand English. After 20 years working at the Dominican Literacy Center in Aurora, she is now lending her expertise at the new Springfield center.
She continues to see a problem in the city that is often misunderstood or overlooked.
"The immigrant community here is very much in the shadows. And so people living their everyday life here wouldn't necessarily know that there are immigrants here, but there are pockets of them all over the city of Springfield," she said.
"They are trying to eke out a living just like everybody else and become part of the community and contribute to the community if they possibly can." [make this bold, but not highlighted]
You might want to check out Scott Reeder’s story about the center in Illinois Times. After the story was published the new literacy center received many calls from eager volunteers and students wanting to be involved with the new program.
You can be involved too, by donating to the program!
