Lighting a Candle in Response to these Times

candle-1899626_640A statement from the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, Ill.

Last fall the State Journal-Register ran a guest column by our Sister Teresa Marron in which she explained that our vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience are “a prophetic witness against the abuse of money, sex, and power.”

We find ourselves after a divisive election, with a desire to state publicly our recommittment to those vows and to the people we serve through them.

Throughout the election cycle we became concerned about the state of our democracy and its future. Now we ask ourselves, what can we Dominican Sisters contribute to the civil discourse that can make a difference?

We’ve all heard the expression “It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.” We choose to light our candle. We want to do our part to heal the divisions that have wounded many in our nation and threatened our civility, our democracy, and our very souls.

For three Wednesdays after the inauguration ceremonies we offer a series of “Brown Bag Seminars” to welcome into dialogue those who wish to walk together on a journey of recommittment and healing for our nation.

Each is scheduled for 12:10-1:00 p.m. in the Aquinas Center at Sacred Heart Convent, 1237 W. Monroe St., Springfield. For more information, call 217-787-0481 or click. Registration is appreciated; not required.

We recommit to dismantling racist structures in our own institutions. We invite those who want to learn how they can begin a journey toward racial equity and healing in their own businesses and organizations to take a first step toward racial justice and equity. We desire to share with all people our experience of prayer, grounding our desire for right relationship in our relationship with God—the Holy Mystery who creates everything in goodness and draws all together in love. Join us at 12:10-1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 8.
