Dominicans Join Call for Just Budget in Illinois

DSC09960_web

Springfield Dominican Sisters Marcelline Koch and Beth Murphy were among the crowd at the Illinois Statehouse today, calling for new revenue for a just budget that preserves funding for social services that are critical for the well-being of Illinois citizens who need everything from skilled care to legal assistance, child care to a college education.

More than 250 service agencies were represented at the rally hosted by the Responsible Budget Coalition.

The rally began at 11 am in the Statehouse rotunda and migrated upstairs to third floor just before noon when Governor Bruce Rauner began his state of the state address.

“It’s always the poorest and most vulnerable citizens who suffer the consequences of government gridlock,” said Sister Marcelline, who is the justice promoter for the Springfield Dominicans. “It is unconscionable that poor children, teens, and elderly people are paying the price for our elected leaders’ inability to act.”
