How One Sister Became a Bridge for Many
A Bridge to Friendship
Like Kara and the Lim family, music is a bridge that unites Mike and Karen Beckmann to their faith, to the praying community to which they belong, and to Sister Francis Mary. Mike arrived in Springfield in 1997 to begin work in the pathology group at Memorial Medical Center. Because some of his colleagues and […]
A Bridge to Fidelity
COVID was about to upend wedding plans for Kathy Lim’s son. So why was she so happy? Marc finished his first year as an attending interventional radiology physician at Oregon Health & Science University when he needed to move cross-country to join his fiancé, Stephanie. Kathy offered to accompany him. During their eastward journey it […]
A Conversation with Sister Francis Mary
Don’t miss this beautiful conversation about the value of friendship and the importance of faith for lives full of meaning and purpose. Sister Francis Mary Philipp and Kara Mernaugh met when Kara was a young child. Over a quarter-century their relationship changed, but faith has always been at the heart of it. When Kara was […]
A Bridge to Adulthood
Sister Francis Mary and Kara Mernaugh discovered early in life that music was the medium through which they would communicate their faith. It was the magic of a player piano and her mother’s music-making that sealed the deal for Sister Francis Mary. She began her music lessons in first grade because “It’s what you did.” […]
A Bridge to a Call
Talk with Sister Francis Mary Philipp for any length of time and you are likely to learn three things: music is the heart of her relationships; she loves accompanying others to their full potential; her life-story is a master class in “bridging”-a musical technique that brings the listener full circle back to the heart of […]
Sister Sara Koch remembers:
The Adventures of a young Sister Mary Paul McCaughey
The youngest sister on St. Dominic Mission in 1970 was Sister Mary Paul McCaughey. She was vivacious, intelligent, energetic, and tackled any opportunity to get a job DONE. One of the first stories I recall her sharing at the convent dinner table was about her Marian Catholic High School 1967prom night. Seems that after the […]
During the pandemic we came to appreciate the way technology helps us bridge barriers between our sisters and those they serve in ministry.
Technology bridged the barrier between our senior sisters and sisters on mission throughout North and South America.
It permitted vital connections between our sisters, their coworkers, students, and others they once served and counseled in person.
It allowed our sisters to be virtually present for the burial rites of our sisters who’ve died since last March.
It gave us access to the insights of scripture scholars, theologians, and spiritual leaders through virtual conferences and webinars.
A Conversation with Sister Francis Mary
Don't miss the story of Sister Francis Mary Philipp and her friendship with Kara Mernaugh! When Kara was 9 she felt a call—her words—to music ministry. Sister Francis Mary became a bridge for Kara, developing her innate musical gifts into skills Kara has used her entire life to lead others in prayer.
“I would just say your constant love, your guidance, and your nurturing nature has definitely been a bridge through life’s highs
and lows...”
Our sisters, associates, and friends say if it weren’t for phone calls, notes, and outreach through teleconferencing tools the stress and isolation of the pandemic would have been more difficult. A gift from you will ensure we can continue to build bridges of care.
