- Fifth annual March Observance highlights the contributions of Catholic Sisters to Church, Society
- Kids, families and adults will find a welcome among the Dominican Sisters during the March observance of the annual event.
Raucous games, genteel teas, nature hikes, and a social media blitz are all on the schedule for the Dominican Sisters of Springfield’s National Catholic Sisters Week activities in March. Oh yes, and there’s Evening Prayer.

Sister Shout-Out
Participation is global and unlimited for this virtual event that gives everyone an opportunity to tell the world about the positive ways Catholic Sisters have influence their lives.
“The shout-out is a way for people who’ve had positive experiences with specific sisters to say thank you in a public way,” said Sister Beth Murphy, OP, the Dominican Sisters’ communications director. “It means so much to our senior sisters to know that their former students remember the life-lessons they taught. Let us hear from you!”

Sisters to the Land
Young adults in the Springfield area can participate in “Sisters to the Land,” a great way to explore the Christian imperative to honor and respect Earth.
The event is scheduled 1:00-4:00 p.m., Saturday March 9, at Jubilee Farm, 6760 Old Jacksonville Road, New Berlin, IL 62670. Participants can try their hand at sustainable gardening, enjoy a 30-minute contemplative nature hike, and collaborate on a fun earth loom activity.
Pre-registration is required. Space is limited so register early.
Hospitality Night
Sacred Heart-Griffin High School juniors and seniors will join the sisters for Evening Prayer, dinner, and a legendary (and lively!) evening of card and board games.
Students register with their theology teachers in order to participate.
Evening Prayer in the historic Sacred Heart Convent chapel begins at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, and is followed immediately by dinner and game night.
Mother-Daughter Tea & Tour
Moms and their pre-teen daughters are welcome for a Mother-Daughter Tea & Tour, 2:00-3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 24 at Sacred Heart Convent, 1237 W Monroe St, Springfield 62704. They’ll enjoy an interactive, kid-friendly tour of Sacred Heart Convent Chapel followed by some tea (or lemonade)—and the sisters’ secret-recipe sweets. Daughters go home with a goody bag and one of the sisters’ secret recipes to try at home. You can register here for this limited-space event.
NCSW is an annual celebration created to honor women religious, recognize the vital role sisters play in society, and encourage young women to think about becoming sisters themselves.
National Catholic Sisters Week is coordinated by the National Catholic Sisters Project at Alverno College, Milwaukee, Wisc., and is headquartered at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The annual even is held in conjunction with Women’s History Month.
I was a student of the the Dominican Sisters at Marian High School in Chicago heights from 1960 to 1964. What a wonderful education these provided for me. I often think of them and their true dedication to God and Their students. I’m now 75 so probably most of my wonderful teachers have passed on.
