Springfield Dominican Sister M. Stanley Karnosky, OP, died peacefully, Monday, August 9, at Sacred Heart Convent in the 62nd year of her religious profession. She was born in Livingston, Ill., in 1924 and baptized Lillian Doris by her parents, Stanley and Anna Yucius Karnosky. She joined the Dominicans in 1958 and professed her vows in 1959 at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield, Ill.
Sister M. Stanley gave nearly all of her years of active ministry as a middle school teacher in central Illinois, teaching at CCD centers in Arcola and Beardstown and in elementary schools in Newton, East Alton, and Granite City, where she taught fifth grade for 19 years. She taught in Sauk Village, and for 10 years in East Moline. She was older than most candidates when she joined the Dominicans after 17 years of employment at Olin Corporation, East Alton. Sister M. Stanley’s love of baseball was legendary. As a young adult she organized a girl’s league, then put her interest to work in ministry by integrating physical education into her teaching curriculum.
Sister M. Stanley was preceded in death by her parents and her eight siblings: two infants; brothers Ben, Stanley, Thomas, and Anton Karnosky; sisters Valentine Karnosky and Helen Heisterberg. She is survived by four nieces and five nephews, and many dear friends.
