Springfield Dominican Sister Mary Dolorita Brown died January 23, 2019, at Sacred Heart Convent. She was born in Chicago, Ill., in 1934, and named Dolores Rosalie by her parents, James and Evelyn (Krawzak) Brown. She made her profession of vows in 1952 at Sacred Heart Convent.
Sister M. Dolorita ministered in Catholic schools in the Illinois dioceses of Springfield, Peoria, and Joliet. She taught primary grades at Sacred Heart, Pana; Holy Family Granite City; Christ the King, Springfield; St. Anne, St. Anne; St. Thomas, Philo; Holy Cross, Mendota; and St. Vincent DePaul, Peoria. In Jackson, Miss., she taught and coordinated the curriculum at St. Dominic Hospital’s child day care center, 1984-990.
During her tenure at Sacred Heart Convent she had a ministry of prayer and internal community service, created jewelry which sold at local craft fairs, and was always attentive to the seasonal decorations that brought such joy to her sisters at the motherhouse.
Sister M. Dolorita was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters Patricia (Bill) Burke, Eileen Brown, and Joan Duplex. She is survived by her brother John Brown, sister Noreen (James) Richert, her brother-in-law Robert Duplex, many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Visitors are welcome. Prayer Service: 4:00 p.m. with visitation until 6:15 p.m., Mon., Jan. 28, Aquinas Center, Sacred Heart Convent, 1237 W. Monroe St. Funeral Mass: 6:30 p.m. convent chapel. Morning prayer and final commendation: 10:30 a.m., convent chapel, Tues., Jan 29, Father Peter Witchousky, OP, celebrant. Burial follows, Calvary Cemetery.
