My aunt and one of my heroes was a Springfield Dominican who spent many years serving the poor in Peru. After she returned to the United States she opened my eyes to the dedication Springfield the sisters had for social justice. Although my aunt is gone, we still are happy to support the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, Illinois, and we are glad that they are in our lives. Listen as Becky shares her story:
Becky’s aunt was Sister Doris Taylor. Known as Sister Leona when she became one of the pioneer missionaries in Peru, during her decades in Peru she was a teacher and pastoral minister. Once back in the U.S., Sister Doris continued her outreach to immigrants in Kentucky and Illinois. Sister Doris died on December 31, 2016, but she is not entirely gone from us. She made such an impact on one family in Peru they named their daughter after her. Now that child—Sister Doris Terrell Jimenez—is a Springfield Dominican herself, and nurse.
