Visitation: 4:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Monday, July 31, 2023, at Sacred Heart Convent Chapel, 1237 W. Monroe St., Springfield, IL 62704. Visitation will begin with a prayer service.

Funeral Mass: 6:30 p.m. on Monday, at Sacred Heart Convent Chapel, Dominican Father Michael DeTemple, celebrant.

Springfield Dominican Sister Carole Dittrich, once known as Sister M Consuela, died July 25, 2023, at Sacred Heart Convent. She was born in 1936, in Madison, Ill., to Emil and Pauline (Nee Adams) Dittrich. She was baptized Caroline Alice at St. Mary Church, Madison. She made her profession of vows in 1955 at Sacred Heart Convent.

Sister Carole taught primary grades for her entire ministerial life, usually first grade, sometimes second or third, and often music as well. She taught in cities and towns throughout the state. She was longest at Our Lady of Grace School in Chicago, where she taught first grade for 21 years. She also taught in Cary and Evergreen Park, and in central Illinois at St. Frances Cabrini, Springfield where she served two different times for a total of seven years. Her other teaching assignments included parochial schools in Quincy, Jerseyville, Decatur, Carrollton, Paris, and Mt. Sterling.

Sister Carole was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Eugene. She is survived by her sister-in-law Peggy Dittrich, Broken Arrow, Okla., nephew Brian (Melanie) Dittrich, Oklahoma City, Okla.; niece Lisa Hines of Claremore, Okla.; cousin Deedee Moore, Maryville; their families, and her Dominican Sisters.

Visitors are welcome; Visitation: 4:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Monday, July 31, 2023, at Sacred Heart Convent Chapel, 1237 W. Monroe St., Springfield, IL 62704. Visitation will begin with a prayer service.

  1. Sister carole was my grade 1 and 2 teacher at St John’s in Carrollton IL. One Christmas a parent made is all ornaments with our name on them in glitter glue. Mine rolled off the table and broke and I cried. Sister gave me hers with Sister Carole in glitter….I still hang it yearly on my tree. I also still have on a knickknacks shelf the shell I won as a prize in a spelling bee she held with our class. (I’m 57 so this was over 50 yrs ago!). May her soul rest in peace.
