Sisters unveil the statue at the tomb of Lincoln 139 years ago today

Today in Dominican Sisters history:

Foundresses  Sister M. Josephine Meagher and Sister M. Rachel Conway unveiled
the Lincoln statue on the Lincoln Monument in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield,
Illinois on October 15, 1874.

The Bishop’s telegram to the Sisters at the request of President Grant read:

Bishop Baltes authorizes Sister Josephine Meagher, the Superior of Saint Patrick’s School, Jacksonville, Illinois, to take a companion and depart at once for Springfield, Illinois, where in compliance with the President’s request, they will unveil the statue at the tomb of Lincoln.
